A tūrehu (spirit) from Rarohenga (the Underworld) who fled back to her father, Uetonga after being mistreated by her husband Mataora, who was of the natural world. 

Mataora followed, was apologetic and forgiven.  Uetonga taught him the art of tā moko which he brought back to the natural world, while Niwareka brought back the artform of tāniko.

Some Māori tāmoko artist pay homage to Niwareka by including the x shape in moko
